SUNYAC Volleyball Players Receive AVCA All-Region Nod

 

Six volleyball student-athletes from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) received 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-New York Region honors, as announced by the AVCA. New Paltz's Dana Kindelmann (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and Cortland teammates Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope, NY/Minisink Valley) and Kristen Guercio (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) garnered recognition on the New York Team, while three more received honorable mention nods.
 
Kindelmann, a senior middle hitter, led New Paltz and the conference with a .355 hitting percentage, totaling 266 kills on 628 attempts. She led the Hawks in blocking with .075 per set and earned second-team All-Conference and All-tournament honors. New Paltz finished 28-11 on the season and advanced to the SUNYAC Tournament finals for the third consecutive year.

Coyle, who was named the SUNYAC Player of the East Division, leads the Red Dragons with 565 kills, tied for the second highest single-season total in school history. The junior outside hitter averages nearly four kills per set, has a .267 attack percentage and is Cortland's leader with 474 digs (3.3 per set).

Guercio, a sophomore setter, earns All-Region after most recently being named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP and Division III Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 7. Guercio has 1527 assists (10.53 per set) in addition to 323 digs and 20 service aces. Cortland has a current 33-7 overall record and will face Case Western Reserve in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday Nov. 12.
 
Right side Geneseo senior Krista Frieling (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North), freshman libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and Fredonia junior libero Sarah Zureck (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's of Lancaster) gained New York Region recognition, landing on the Honorable Mention List.
