2024 SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Top Honors Announced
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC releases its 2024 women's volleyball annual awards including All-Conference Teams, Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the year as voted on by the conference coaches.
Player of the Year - Emily Huppee, Morrisville
In 2024, Huppee led the conference with 169 kills (5.28 kills per set), 420 total attacks (13.13 total attacks per set) and 189 points (5.9 points per set) over nine regular season league matches. She was named the SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week four times this season. Overall, Huppee led the conference with 555 kills (5.09 kills per set) 1,326 total attacks (12.17 total attacks per set), 57 service aces and 633.5 points (5.8 points per set).The Mustangs were the No. 3 seed going into postseason play where they advanced to the semifinals, but fell short to No. 2 Buffalo State in five sets. Huppee was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team after she totaled 77 points on 70 kills and seven service aces and added 31 digs in two five set matches.
Defensive Player of the Year - Mikenzie Martens, Cortland
Martens repeats as the SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year after she totaled 102 digs, averaged 3.78 digs per set and added 36 assists and 12 service aces in conference play. The senior helped lead her team to its fourth-straight SUNYAC championship title with a 3-0 win against No. 2 Buffalo State on Saturday. Overall, Martens is ranked first in the league with 493 digs and ranked second with a 5.03 digs per set average so far this season. Cortland did not lose a set to a SUNYAC opponent this season in nine regular-season matches and two conference tournament matches. The Red Dragons accomplished that feat for the first time since 2000. Martens was named the SUNYAC Defensive Athlete of the Week six times in 2024 and she will continue her season in the NCAA tournament. Cortland will face Carnegie Mellon at Johns Hopkins in the first round on Thursday, November 21.
Rookie of the Year - Priscilla McReynolds, Oswego
McReynolds finished seventh in the league with 114.5 points and she was ranked eighth with 96 kills in conference competition. Overall she was fifth in the conference totaling 351.5 points and 299 kills. In her first season, McReynolds started in all 28 matches for the Lakers. She had a season high of 22 kills and 23.5 points on September 14. McReynolds also totaled 271 digs, 36 service aces and 19 assists overall. Oswego was the fifth seed and ended their season in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament with a 14-14 overall record.
Coach of the Year - Maria Roberts, Buffalo State
This is Roberts' first SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year accolade since becoming the Buffalo State women's volleyball head coach in 2011. Roberts guided the Bengals to their first appearance in the SUNYAC championship since 2013 with an 8-1 regular season conference record to take the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals. The team came back from a 2-0 deficit in the SUNYAC semifinal match to beat No. 3 Morrisville, 3-2, and advance to the championship match. The Buffalo State squad fought the top seeded Cortland, but the Red Dragons topped the Bengals in three sets, 25-14, 25-9, 25-22. Roberts coached four all-conference team selections and clinched 20 wins overall for the first time since 2014 (20-10).
