SUNYAC schools and individuals to compete at NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships

The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Sunday the team and individual qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships.

Five State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) teams will be participating in the event. On the men's side, Geneseo earned an automatic bid with its second place finish at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships. Cortland was selected as an at-large after placing third in the Regionals.

Wilmington College (Ohio) and the Warren County Convention and Visitor's Bureau are co-hosting the championships, November 22, at the Golf Center at King's Island in Mason, Ohio.  The men's race will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time followed by the women's race at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Fredonia's Zakk Hess earned individual automatic qualification to the NCAA Men's Championship race after placing fourth in the 8,000 meters, with a time of 25:17.3 at the Atlantic Regional.

The Geneseo women finished second out of 40 teams at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships, earning them an automatic berth into the National Championship for the 16th consecutive time. Oneonta finished third in the regional and will enter the National Championship as an at-large team, along with Cortland, who finished fourth.

Brockport's Rachel Malone will represent her school as an automatic qualifier after finishing fifth at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships, with a time of 21:39.6.

In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions.

Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship.  The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams.  Sixteen additional teams were selected at-large.

Fifty-six individuals, the first seven athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate in each championship.
