
SUNYAC Honors 14 Athletes with Weekly Awards
The SUNYAC releases its Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 12. The league honors 14 athletes across eight sports.
Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Kendall Arcuri, Cortland (Staten Island, NY)
Arcuri averaged 21 points, six rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in a 3-0 week for the Red Dragons. He shot 60 percent from the field (22-of-37), including 47 percent from 3-point range (9-of-19). He opened the week with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a 75-63 win at Fredonia on Tuesday. On Friday at home, he matched his career high with 28 points and added six rebounds and three assists in an 81-66 win over Canton. Arcuri closed the week Saturday afternoon with 18 points, five assists and four rebounds in an 81-65 home win over Oswego - Cortland's first victory over the Lakers in five years.
Women's Basketball - Natalie Bartle, Canton (Negaunee, MI)
Bartle averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.7 steals in a 2-1 week in SUNYAC play for the Roos last week. She opened the week with 14 points and game-highs of five steals and five assists to go with three rebounds in a 68-55 win against Oneonta on Tuesday, Canton?s first ever SUNYAC win. The senior followed that up with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and added three steals in a 67-53 loss at Cortland on Friday. Bartle closed out the week with game-highs of 21 points, six assists and three steals to go with six boards in an 84-62 road win at Morrisville on Saturday. For the week she shot 44% from the field, 43% from three-point range and 86% from the foul line.
Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Nate Berke, Cortland (Williamsville, NY)
Berke had a four-point week on two goals and two assist in helping Cortland, ranked 13th nationally by USCHO and ninth nationally by DIII Hockey News, to a 2-1 record. The graduate student's best performance came against Nazareth on Friday, scoring a goal in the first period on a stellar one-timer from a tight angle, and also adding an assist for the Red Dragons. He also netted a goal for Cortland in a 6-2 victory and had an on-ice rating of (+2) against Manhattanville. Berke began the week by providing an assist on Cortland's opening goal in a 3-2 road win over nationally 10th-ranked Wilkes on Monday evening.
Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week - Drew Doran, Buffalo State (Orchard Park, NY)
Doran was crucial for the Bengals in a pair of non-conference wins over Chatham. Doran compiled 44 save with an .880 save percentage across two starts. His 25 saves in Friday's start were a season high as the Bengals are now 3-1-0 in games Doran has started this season.
Men's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Joonas Linnavuori, Buffalo State (Helsinki, Finland)
Linnavuori had a strong weekend for the men's hockey team as Buffalo State came away with a pair of non-conference wins against Chatham. Linnavuori picked up an assist in Friday's matchup before scoring a pair of goals and tallying another assist to lead the Bengals in Saturday's 5-3 win.
Women's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week - Chloe Lewis, Plattsburgh (Monson, MA)
Chloe Lewis led Plattsburgh to two wins over the three-game week for the Cardinals, going 2-1 with 69 total saves and a 1.01 goals-against average, all while taking home MVP honors in the East-West Classic. She earned MVP honors concluding the tournament with the win between the pipes, making 21 saves in a 4-2 Cardinal win against Norwich. She followed up that game with a season-high 28 saves against No. 6 Oswego State, shutting out the Lakers in 60 minutes. In the team's lone loss of the week, she allowed just one goal, making 20 saves in just over 59 minutes of play.
Women's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Kira Cook, Cortland (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY)
Cook had a strong week for Cortland in helping the Red Dragons, ranked 10th nationally by USCHO and ninth nationally by DIII Hockey News, to a weekend sweep over Buffalo State. The sophomore, in her first season of collegiate competition, netted a pair of goals, including the game-winning goal, on Saturday to lead Cortland to a 4-1 victory. She also was on the ice for Cortland's tying goal in a 2-1 overtime victory on Friday afternoon.
Women's Swimmer of the Week - Peyton Glor, Cortland (Tonawanda, NY)
Glor won two individual events and led off a winning relay during Cortland's 162-83 home dual-meet win over New Paltz Saturday. She won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.96 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:19.63, and she swam the opening backstroke leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay that finished in 4:15.07.
Women's Diver of the Week - Alyssa Haberlack, Cortland (Long Beach, NY)
Haberlack won 3-meter diving as an exhibition entry with an 11-dive score of 401.10 points during Cortland's home dual-meet win over New Paltz.
Men's Swimmer of the Week - Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf, Cortland (Valley Cottage, NY)
Sugrue-Neuendorf won two individual events and was part of a winning relay during Cortland's home 166-85 dual-meet win over New Paltz Saturday. He captured the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.29) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.49) and swam the breaststroke leg for the winning 400-yard medley relay that finished in 3:38.79.
Men's Diver of the Week - Kazuki Kadota-Browner, Cortland (Jericho, NY)
Kadota-Browner broke the school record for six dives in 3-meter diving with a score of 337.35 points during Cortland's home dual meet versus New Paltz. He broke the school record that was established in 1984.
Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Ayobami Adebayo, Oneonta (Long Island, NY)
Freshman Ayobami Adebayo won the men's high jump at the Cornell Southern Tier Invite. He competed against a field of Division I, II, and III athletes and cleared 1.93 meters. He also placed fifth in the triple jump at 13.16 meters.
Men's Wrestler of the Week - Angelo Centrone, Cortland (Mahopac, N.Y.)
Centrone was named to the all-tournament team at 149 pounds at the 16-team Budd Whitehill National Duals. He finished the tournament 5-0 with a pin and four technical falls and improved his record to 17-0 for the season with three pins and 13 technical falls.
Men's Wresling Rookie of the Week - Jackson Maby, Oneonta (Susquehanna, PA)
Maby finished the week 4-0 at 141 lbs. with a pin and tech fall as Oneonta went 5-1 in dual matches this week. He started the week with a 16-0 tech fall against Keystone at the Keystone tri-meet, then picked up three victories at the Manganaro Duals at Ursinus College. The freshman pinned Trinity College's Ty Trickle, who is ranked sixth in Region One at 133 lbs., in 4:11, then he scored a 13-0 major decision over Rhode Island College's Hunter Lundberg. Maby finished the week with an 11-5 decision against Southern Maine's Kyle Moore.
