
Five SUNYAC Fall Athletes Voted 2024 SUNY Scholar Athletes of the Year
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - There are 20 fall student-athletes, including five SUNYAC athletes, being honored with the 2024 SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition.
The Fall SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards recognize student-athletes from SUNY colleges and universities sponsoring intercollegiate athletics at the four- and two-year levels who were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions.
Nominating information includes cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors.
More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards.
The following SUNYAC student-athletes have been selected as the 2024 Fall SUNY Scholar Athlete Award winners:
Men's Cross Country - Adam Schreiber, Cortland
Schreiber is a graduate student majoring in sport management. He maintained a 3.92 overall undergraduate GPA as a sport studies major at Cortland. Schreiber was the 2024 SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2022 SUNYAC Elite 20 co-winner.
This season, Schreiber finished fourth at the SUNYAC championship meet. With the fourth place finish he earned first team All-SUNYAC and was inducted into the SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Hall of Fame. He was Cortland's top finisher at the Niagara Regional finishing 43rd out of 170 runners. Schreiber improved on his 2023 finishes of 28th at SUNYACs and 57th at regionals.
Women's Cross Country - Sabrinna Mena, Oneonta
Mena is a senior dietetics major maintaining a 3.94 cumulative GPA at Oneonta. She was the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Elite 20 winner in 2024.
Mena finished second at the 2024 SUNYAC championship meet with a time of 24:04.9. She went on to earn All-region at the Niagara Region championship with a 20th place finish at 23:05.9. Mena also finished second at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invite.
Men's Soccer - Mateo Marra, Cortland
Marra holds a 3.47 overall GPA as a graduate student and recieved his undergraduate degree in sport management with a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
Marra was a United Soccer Coaches first team All-America midfielder for the second straight year and was first team All-Region 3. He was also named to the 2024 first team All-SUNYAC. Marra was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after helping his team repeat as SUNYAC champions. This season he totaled 13 goals, 6 assists for 32 points, with four game-winning goals, in 18 games. In three seasons, Marra has a career total of 33 goals and 26 assists for 92 points.
Women's Soccer - Rachel Eisert, New Paltz
Eisert had a 4.0 in the fall semester for an overall GPA of 3.91 as a communications disorders major during the best season to date for any soccer player at New Paltz.
Eisert was named to her second Academic All-America selection and became just the second Hawk ever to be named an All-American, landing on United Soccer Coaches second team. She was additionally named United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-Region and won her second-straight SUNYAC Player of the Year after setting new single season program records for goals and points. Eisert was also named the SUNYAC MVP after leading the Hawks to their second overall SUNYAC title.
Women's Volleyball - Mikenzie Martens, Cortland
Senior Martens was recently named the SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year. She holds a 3.99 cumulative GPA as a physical education major at Cortland. This season, she was recognized as the SUNYAC Elite 20 winner for third straight year. Martens was also CSC Academic All-District for the third straight year (was 2023 Third Team Academic All-American and is a candidate for that award this season).
Martens earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors and was first team All-Region 3 defensive specialist/libero for second straight year. She was the 2024 SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Martens had 517 digs, 39 aces in 102 sets in 32 matches. She helped Cortland win its fourth straight SUNYAC title in 2024. Martens has a four-year career total of 1,404 digs and 105 aces.
