New Paltz, NY — The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at the State University of New York New Paltz is set to hold "Pink Out" Breast Cancer Awareness games, fundraising efforts that recognize and honor Breast Cancer survivors and the many affected by the disease.
"I've been wanting to get SAAC involved with breast cancer awareness month for a few years, so I'm super excited that we're finally able to start a tradition that hopefully sticks around," said SAAC president Gaby Treble. "My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was in middle school and I saw firsthand how difficult it was for her to fight through. As I grew up I realized how many other people had loved ones who went through the same thing."
The initiative will begin in the Fall 2024 season, as all in-season teams have dedicated one game in their season to be their "pink out" game, where the stands, fields, and courts will be decorated. Ribbons will be handed out, as well as QR codes posted around the area so attendees can donate to the cause.
"We are organizing Pink Out games to raise awareness in honor of those affected by breast cancer," said SAAC community relations head Rachel Tama. "SAAC has come together to create posters to hang at the games, and we'll also be giving out pink ribbons, [but] each team has the freedom to decorate and spread awareness in their own way."
Although the Breast Cancer Awareness games are a new addition for the 2024-2025 academic year, SAAC's efforts to raise awareness and fight cancer are not new, as last September the organization hosted a "Relay for Life," a 12-hour walk-a-thon which fundraised for the American Cancer Society. The event inspired this year's efforts to help fight Breast Cancer, especially during October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
"Breast Cancer is the leading type of cancer in women and although less common, men can develop breast cancer as well," said Treble. "I think the most important part of doing the awareness games in October is the support it shows for the individuals and families who have had to live through the diagnosis, treatment, and remission."
The first "Pink Out" game is Oct. 5, when women's volleyball takes on Baruch College. On Oct. 9, both field hockey and men's soccer will host their awareness games against FDU-Florham and SUNY Morrisville, respectively.
The final fall "Pink Out" game is scheduled for Oct. 26, when women's soccer hosts SUNYAC opponent Oswego. However, "these events won't be limited to just October," Tama said. "Each sport will have the opportunity to participate throughout the year."
"I'm really excited to see our athletes come together to honor those they know who have been impacted by this terrible disease," Tama said. "[And] I'm honored to help assist in organizing the games and looking forward to our teams getting the win and spreading awareness."
