SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SUNYAC picks Gianna Trunfio from Cortland and Maura Leib from Oneonta as its first Field Hockey Athletes of the Week for the 2023 season.

In her first career game as a Red Dragon, Trunfio scored a pair of goals to help Cortland earn a 4-2 win at Montclair St. to open the season. Trunfio tallied Cortland's third goal 20 seconds before the end of the first half on a penalty stroke and added a key insurance goal 4:48 into the fourth quarter

Leib started in the cage and helped Oneonta to a 1-1 opening week, recording 21 total saves with a .840 save percentage. In the season opener, Leib stopped four shots in 40 minutes as the Red Dragons won 7-1 against Utica. In a tough battle versus St. Lawrence, Leib saved a career-high 17 shots.
