Box Score

CALEDONIA, N.Y. – Third-seeded SUNY Geneseo’s (9-6-3) Colin Begy found the feet of Ryan Yurchak with 28 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, as the Blue Knights ousted the sixth-seeded State University of New York at New Paltz men’s soccer team (8-10-1) from the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament by a 3-2 final on Saturday afternoon in quarterfinal action at Caledonia-Mumford High School.

Geneseo’s James Hainsworth put the Blue Knights on the board early, scoring in the third minute off of a pass over the top by Jop Smit. The Hawks responded, however, as senior Tommy Garafola laced a centering pass to junior midfielder/forward Shanshe Khosroshvili in the 27th minute, which Khosroshvili hammered home from around 20 yards out.

The Blue Knights took a 2-1 lead into the break, as Nick Cava played a ball to John Piaggione, which Piaggione hopped over the Hawk goalkeeper with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.

Senior forward Jimmy Altadonna continued to flash his scoring touch in the 65th minute, as he put a loose ball into the back of the net to level the score at 2-all. Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but neither was able to capitalize, and the game went into overtime.

New Paltz was unable to get a shot off in overtime, and Yurchak’s score, which was from just outside the 6-yard box, was Geneseo’s second of the period.

On the contest, the Blue Knights outshot the Hawks, 17-12, and Geneseo took six corner kicks to New Paltz’s four.

Sam Murphy collected the win in goal for the Blue Knights, making a game-high eight stops. The Hawks used two different goalkeepers. Senior goalkeeper Tom Viscardi drew the start and made three saves before freshman goalkeeper Andres Montoya took over at the start of the second half and turned aside four Blue Knight shots.

With the win, Geneseo faces its Rochester-area rival, The College at Brockport, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the semifinals. Brockport earned a bye through the quarterfinal round and holds the No. 2 seed.

New Paltz finishes its season at 8-10-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the SUNYAC.
