Late Goal Advances Brockport Men's Soccer

BOXSCORE

Senior Brian Duffy (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored from 20 yards out on a direct kick that found space between the end of the wall of defenders and the far post of the goal as The College at Brockport scored a 1-0 win over Manhattanville College Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament in a neutral site game played at Stevens Tech. in Hoboken, NJ.

Brockport (13-4-1) advances to play host Stevens Tech. at 5 pm Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles have advanced to the second round of the tournament in each of the last two seasons. Stevens advanced with a 3-0 win over Lehman College earlier Saturday to set up the second round match up. Brockport defeated Stevens early in the season with a 2-1 double-overtime victory.

After a scoreless first half and nearly 40 minutes of the second half, Brockport was awarded a free kick just outside the Manhattanville (15-5-1) 18-yard box. Once the wall of defenders was set and moved back to the 10-yard distance, Duffy fired a low shot just past the wall and a diving Valliant goalie into the side netting of the goal for the only goal of the contest.

Shortly after the resumption of play, Manhattanville had an offensive surge and a hard shot for 18-yards out that looked to be headed toward the top corner of the Brockport goal but the shot was deflected off the back of Max Egan (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and out of danger.

Senior goalie Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made four saves to record his ninth shutout of the season. Manhattanville was credited with 17 total shots but just four on goal while Brockport fired 12 shots with five on target. There were 33 total fouls whistled in the contest with four yellow cards and one red card issued.
