Brockport Athletes Take Part in Walk to School Day

The College at Brockport women's basketball and baseball teams took part in the annual National Walk to School Day on Wednesday, joining students and parents in the national effort to promote good health with a walk to school rather than taking the bus or driving.

Started in 1997, the National Walk to School Day expanded in 2012 to include a Bike to school option. Every year it continues to encourage good health habits to not only school-aged children, but their parents as well.

In 2011, there were more than 4,000 Walk to School events registered in the 50 states along with additional events around the world.

"This is such a wonderful event to be a part of," said baseball head coach Justin Beach. "It is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get to interact with the youth of the community. Encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle is especially important today with such a large percent of obesity in our society. It is truly a win-win for both the athletes and the community."

On Wednesday morning, the Golden Eagle athletes walked with different groups of children and parents, while providing encouragement and being role models for good health. All of the participants received apples and other healthy treats to promote even more healthy habits.

"Participating in this event is a very fun and special experience," said women's basketball player Codi Battaglia (Webster, NY/Aquinas Institute). "Being able to represent Brockport women's basketball as we share stories and connect with our community is very rewarding."
