Oneonta Women's lacrosse featured on Lacrossemagazine.com

The Oneonta State women’s lacrosse team has started fast out of the gate and, after taking down #17 Hamilton this past Tuesday, has started to raise some eyebrows around the country.  The team, which has many newcomers and a first-year coach, is off to a 6-0 start, which is its best beginning to a season since 2003 when the Red Dragons won the first seven games of the season.

The key to the team’s early success has been a potent scoring attack and controlling the draws.  The Red Dragons are currently 12th in Div. III in scoring, averaging just over 17 goals per game.  Their average margin of victory is just over seven goals per game and is 22nd currently in the nation.  They are averaging 19.6 draw controls per game, which is second in Div. III, just behind national leader Gordon College, who is just over 20 draw controls per contest.

Individually, senior Rebecca Monteith, who is the leading scorer for Oneonta with 37 points, is ninth in Div. III in assists per game (3.0).  Classmate, and fellow captain Heidi Kissinger, is third nationally averaging an even nine draw controls per game.

Oneonta will put its undefeated record on the line this Saturday when they host Buffalo State in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.  The Bengals come to town with an overall record of 7-2, which includes a one-goal win versus Hamilton earlier in the season.  Although it’s the first conference game of the season, the winner may find themselves in the driver’s seat in the early going.
