Women's Lacrosse Sprints Past Springfield into Second Round of NCAA Playoffs, 18-10

BUFFALO, NY--Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) netted 10 goals and added three assists to lead Buffalo State (14-6) to a decisive 18-10 victory over visiting Springfield (11-8) in today’s opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse tournament today at Coyer Field.

Shaddock’s 10 goals and 13 points equal Buffalo State single-game records, and she also became the first Bengal to score 100 goals in a season, running her Division III leading season total to 106.  Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) bolstered the Bengals’ attack with two goals and six assists.  Mariah DeBolt (Waterloo/Waterloo) and Becca Martinez (Syracuse/Corcoran) added two goals apiece, Jenn Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) and Niki Paulhardt (Hanover, MN/Oswego) had a goal each, and Ashley Caporizzo (Liverpool/CNS) chipped in two assists.

Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) led Springfield with four goals, and Meghan Flanagan (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) had three goals and an assist.  Kerstin Lindrooth (Bryn Athyn, PA/Acad. of New Church) added a pair of goals, and Brittany LeGuelaff (Oyster Bay, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) also scored.

Springfield opened the scoring on Lindrooth’s first of the game just 36 seconds into the contest, but Buffalo State scored 10 of the next 11 goals, dominating the first half.  After taking a 14-4 lead into the intermission, the Bengals coasted to the victory in the second stanza, not allowing Springfield to close the gap to less than eight goals.

Buffalo State controlled time of possession in large part to a 20-9 advantage on draw controls.  The Bengals also held a 25-17 advantage in shots.  Buffalo State’s Colleen George (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) and Springfield’s Anne Versprille (Franklin, MA/Franklin) made three saves each in their respective goals.

With the win, Buffalo State extended is first-ever NCAA playoff appearance and will face the winner of this evening’s Trinity (Conn.)/Bridgewater State contest in the second round this Saturday.  The time and location of that game is to be determined.
