SUNYAC announces first 2017-18 ice hockey weekly award winners

CORTLAND, N.Y. – With hockey season officially underway, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected the first three recipients for the SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Athlete, Goalie and Rookie of the Week honors.

The inaugural men's ice hockey athlete of the week for the 2017-18 season has been awarded to Connor Hutchins, Brockport's sophomore forward from North Richland Hills, Texas. In the Golden Eagles first two games of the season, led his team on the offense end with five points on three goals and two assists in their 6-2 victory at Kings College and their 4-1 win over Neumann.

The season's first top goaltending performance went to Morrisville's Jared Young from Pueblo West, Colorado. Going 0-0-2 this week, the sophomore net minder kept the Mustangs out of the loss column as he racked up an astounding 81 saves in two overtime ties against Manhattanville and Stevenson. Young stopped all but four of the eighty-five shots he saw as he now has a 1.85 goals against average in 129:35 minutes played so far in this short season.

Many rookies were making their SUNYAC debut this week and of them all, Potsdam's freshman forward, Joey Sollazzo from Ottawa, Ontario seemed to leave the best first impression. In the Bears' two games against St. Michaels this opening weekend, Sollazzo scored a goal on Friday in a 3-3 tie and added two more goals, one of which being a short-hander that put them ahead, in their 5-2 victory on Saturday.
