SUNYAC Selects Ice Hockey Weekly Award Honorees

CORTLAND, NY - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its Athlete, Goalie, and Rookie of the Week for men's ice hockey.  This weeks Athlete of the Week is senior Mitch Herlihey from Oswego, Goalie of the Week is sophomore David Richer from Oswego, and Rookie of the Week is freshman Liam Lawson from Plattsburgh.

Herlihey helped the Lakers to two conference wins over the weekend, achieving a personal milestone as well. First, Herlihey was the difference maker in No. 4 Oswego's crucial victory over No. 7 Geneseo. In the first period, teammate Josh Zizek skated out from behind the net sending a pass to Herlihey, who sent it past the diving Knights goalie. The goal put Herlihey at 99 career points. Herlihey nabbed his 100th career point in the third period, scoring with less than 20 seconds left to secure a 4-2 win for Oswego. The forward followed up on Saturday with the first goal of the game, giving the Lakers an early advantage over the Golden Eagles.

Richer helped the No. 4 Lakers to two weekend victories. First, Richer made 21 saves against No. 7 Geneseo. The sophomore allowed only two goals to a team that entered the game with the top scoring offense in the conference and the fourth-best offense in the nation. On Saturday, Richer followed up by only allowing one goal (in a man-down situation) and stopping 34 shots, just two shy of his career-high.

Lawson posted three points on one goal and two assists in a crucial SUNYAC split over the weekend. He factored into scoring on both of the Cardinal's goals on Friday against Buffalo State, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Lawson then had an assist on Saturday in a 4-2 win over Fredonia. For the season, Lawson has 14 points on three goals and 11 assists.
