Samson and Jones Tabbed SUNYAC Wrestler and Rookie of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC chooses St. John Fisher University's Alex Samson as the Men's Wrestler of the Week and Ithaca College's Jake Jones as the Rookie of the Week.

The Cardinals finished third in the John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. Samson was a big part of that, finishing in first-place in the 141-pound weight class. He began his day with a win by fall at 2:38 over Caden Temple of Wilkes, before using a 21-4 technical fall victory over Aidan Kelly of Baldwin Wallace to advance to the quarterfinal bout. Samson stayed hot with a 4-1 decision over Chris Barthelmey of West Liberty and then dominated in the semi-final match, securing a spot in the first-place match with a 15-0 technical fall over Mason Livio of Wilkes. He used another technical fall to earn the top spot, this time it being a final score of 18-3 over Gabe Hansen of Ohio Northern.

Currently ranked within the top-3 in NCAA Division III in pins, first year Jones racked up three more on Saturday as Ithaca hosted Williams College, Wesleyan University and SUNY Oneonta. In his first matchup at 184 lbs. against Oneonta's James DeLucia, Jones got off to a fast start with two-straight takedown as continued to overpower him, eventually earning a pin in 1:06. He was even more impressive in his bout against Roman Martinez from Wesleyan University as he collected the fall in 51 seconds. His final pin came in 1:03 as he was able to beat Zach Borzio from Williams to improve to 3-0 on the weekend and 29-10 so far this season.
