SUNYAC honors athletes for week of Oct 10-16

CORTLAND, NY - The State University of New York Athletic Conference picks its field hockey, soccer and volleyball athletes of the week going into the last week of regular season play. Seven student-athletes from five different member institutions were honored.

Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week
Maria Premo, Geneseo

(Sr., fielder - Webster, N.Y.)
Premo was credited with a school single-game record four defensive saves in Genese's 5-0 shutout at SUNYAC-rival Oswego on Saturday. It was the Lakers' first home loss after winning their first six of the season. The victory also clinched the Knights the third-seed for the SUNYAC Tournament next month. 

Field Hockey Offensive Athlete of the Week
Jess Gibaldi, Cortland

(So, F - Westbury, N.Y.)
Gibaldi scored seven points on three goals and an assist to help lead Cortland (10-3) to a pair of home wins last week. In a 7-0 SUNYAC victory versus Oswego on Wednesday, she tallied two goals and one assist. Gibaldi then scored the game-winning goal early in the first half in a 1-0 win versus Utica on Sunday. For the season, she has 16 points on seven goals and two assists.

Men's Soccer Defenseive Athlete of the Week
Dillon Medd, Geneseo

(Fy, goalie - Bedford HIlls, N.Y.)
Medd logged a career-high 14 saves in a 1-0 setback to visiting No. 23 Cortland on Friday, before making four saves in a 2-1 win over visiting Oswego on Saturday. 

Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week
Jimmy Ritchie, Fredonia

(Sr, F - East Aurora, N.Y.)
Ritchie had all three goals in Saturday's 3-2 SUNYAC win over Plattsburgh. He scored in the 15th, 42nd, and 54th minutes. Ritchie leads the Blue Devils with seven goals this season. The win left Fredonia on the cusp of making the conference tournament.

Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week
Emily Janiszewski, Geneseo

(So., goalie - Buffalo, N.Y.)
Janiszewski was pitched a pair of SUNYAC road shutouts last week, notching five saves in a 2-0 victory at Cortland and four stops in a 0-0 tie at Oswego. The owner of six shutouts this season, Janiszewski and the Knights are currently riding a streak of 297 consecutive minutes spanning four matches of not being scored upon. 

Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week
Catherine Mammoser, Buffalo St.

(Sr, F - Eden, N.Y.)
The senior forward had two goals and an assist as nationally-ranked Buffalo State extended its winning-streak to nine games and guaranteed a first-round bye in the SUNYAC playoffs. Mammoser scored the first goal of the game in a 2-0 win at Plattsburgh on Friday, and had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory at Potsdam on Saturday.

Volleyball Athlete of the Week
Brianna Richardson, Brockport St.

(Jr, MB -)
Richardson led the Brockport offensive attack to another undefeated week in which they went 5-0 without dropping a set. The junior was a force out of the middle, killing 41 balls in 13 sets played. Those kills came on just 70 attempts, giving her a hitting percentage of .500 for the week. Her best game of the week came on Saturday against Trine when she killed a season-high 16 balls on 25 attempts, swinging at a .560 clip. The Syracuse, N.Y. native helped in the blocking game as well, assisting in three blocks against DeSales on Friday and adding a solo in the win over Utica on Saturday.
