SUNYAC announces Athletes of the Week for Indoor Track & Field and Swimming & Diving

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has picked its Athletes of the Week for men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field. Eight athletes were recognized for their performances during the week of January 23-29.

Men's Swimming and Diving - Diver of the Week - Arron Carlson, Fredonia
(Sr, - LeRoy, N.Y.)

Carlson improved to 20-0 this season while sweeping both boards in his final collegiate home meet. Scored 353.05 points in the 1 meter and 311.25 in the 3 meter against divers from Brockport and Allegheny. He will graduate in May as the pool six-dive record-holder off both boards (set at previous meets).

Men's Swimming and Diving - Swimmer of the Week- Tim Rokos, Cortland
(Fr, - Duanesburg, NY)

Rokos won three individual events as Cortland defeated visiting Oneonta, 168-126, in dual-meet action. He won the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.11), the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.54) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.00). Rokos also swam the butterfly leg in 24.99 seconds on Cortland's winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:40.20).

Women's Swimming and Diving - Diver of the Week - Claudia Kolakowski, Geneseo
(Sr, - Highland Mills, NY)

Senior diver Claudia Kolakowski led SUNY Geneseo to a first-place finish at the Geneseo Invitational with a pair of event wins in the one-meter and three-meter dives. In the one-meter, Kolakowski recorded a score of 280.90 to take first. The senior scored a 291.45 mark in the three-meter dive to finish first in that event as well.

Women's Swimming and Diving - Swimmer of the Week - Mary Jane Leja, Brockport 
(Sr, - Auburn, NY)

Mary Jane Leja had a huge meet, boasting three first place finishes. The senior won the 200-yard free style finishing in a time of 1:57.51, the 50-yard free style with a time of 24.58 and the 100-yard free style touching the wall in a time of 54.44. She also recorded a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.

Men's Indoor Track and Field - Field Athlete of the Week - Dawan Jones, Cortland
(Jr, - Buffalo, NY)

Jones recorded two ECAC-qualifying performances at the Utica College Pioneer Invitational. He finished second of 22 in the triple jump with a distance of 14.33 meters (47' 0.25"), which currently ranks ninth nationally, and he placed third of 39 in the long jump at 6.77 meters (22' 2.5").

Men's Indoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week - Gillan Faulkner, Geneseo
(So - Farmingville, NY)

Faulker won the 800 meter run at the 19th-Annual Bucknell Bison Open on Saturday. Competing against a field of Division I, II and III runners, his time of 1:54.46 is currently tied for third in Division III and first in the SUNYAC. 

Women's Indoor Track and Field - Field Athlete of the Week - Marisa Gosdeck, Brockport
(Jr,  - Alden, NY)

Marisa Gosdeck finished in second place in the pentathlon at the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational on Friday. The junior posted a score of 3067 which currently ranks fourth in the nation. Gosdeck posted first place finishes in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.14 and the long-jump, with a leap of 5.08 meters.

Women's Indoor Track and Field - Track Athlete of the Week - Elise Ramirez, Geneseo
(So, - Nesconset, NY)

Ramirez won the 5,000-meter run against a field of Division I, II and III competition at the 19th-Annual Bucknell Bison Open, Saturday. She crossed the finish line with a time of 17:41.44 that ranks as the 13th-fastest time in Division III and first in the SUNYAC this year.
