SYRACUSE, NY – The State University of New York Athletic Conference was informed on Monday evening, Aug. 21, that SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo will depart the conference at the conclusion of the 2023-24 athletic year.
"While unfortunate that Brockport and Geneseo have chosen to leave the conference, the SUNYAC will remain focused on growing its opportunities for its student-athletes and member institutions," Alberto Cardelle, the president of Oneonta and chair of the SUNYAC Presidents, said. "The conference has been preparing for this possible outcome and will now focus on moving forward."
Despite the pending departures, the SUNYAC remains one of the strongest and most vibrant conferences in all of NCAA Division III. This year will mark its 65th athletic season of competition.
The conference anticipates adding men's wrestling in September for the upcoming season, increasing its total number of sponsored sports to 22. The SUNYAC added women's ice hockey this summer after absorbing the Northeast Women's Ice Hockey League and securing the conference's automatic qualifier in the sport.
"Although both institutions have made the decision to leave the conference, the SUNYAC leadership is committed to its membership and its student-athletes," Tom DiCamillo, commissioner of the SUNYAC stated.
