Cortland Earns 2023-24 Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Cortland wins the 2023-24 SUNYAC Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup for the 18th time in program history and the first time since 2013-14. Geneseo finished second and New Paltz was third. The cup was named for Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.
Through the fall and winter Cortland was at the top of the standings while Geneseo was second and Brockport was third. At the conclusion of the SUNYAC spring championships, Cortland remained at the No. 1 spot and Geneseo at No. 2 while New Paltz moved from fourth place to No. 3.
The Cortland baseball, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse teams finished the regular season No. 1 in the conference while softball and women's tennis were second. The women's lacrosse team went on to win the conference championship for the 24th time in program history. The men's outdoor track and field team finished second at the SUNYAC championship meet and the women were third.
This spring, the Geneseo men's and women's outdoor track and field teams captured the program's 11th and 16th overall titles respectively. In 2024, the Knights men's lacrosse team won their second-straight and fifth overall SUNYAC title. The Geneseo women's lacrosse team advanced to the championship game as the No. 2 seed and the women's tennis team also advanced to the SUNYAC final match as the third seed.
The New Paltz Hawks women's tennis team finished the regular-season as the top seed and went on to win the conference crown for the ninth time overall. The softball team clinched its second straight No. 1 seed and won the program's first SUNYAC championship title. The New Paltz baseball team also claimed its first SUNYAC league crown as the No. 2 seed. The women's lacrosse team earned points for the Hawks after making its first appearance in the conference semifinals as the No. 3 seed.
The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 22 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
