Cortland to Host NCAA Baseball Regional in Auburn for Second Straight Year

For the second straight year, SUNY Cortland has been selected to host the NCAA Division III Baseball New York Regional at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. Cortland will run the regional in conjunction with the Auburn Doubledays from May 18-22, 2011.

The schools participating in the double-elimination regional will be announced on Monday, May 16. The regional champion will advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series May 27-31 in Appleton, Wis.

Cortland finished 4-0 to win an eight-team regional in Auburn last May. The Red Dragons went on to place second nationally in Div. III and finished the season with a 40-10-1 record.

Cortland has qualified for NCAA play each of the last 18 years, the longest active streak nationally in Division III. Six of the Red Dragons 10 regional crowns occurred in Auburn (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010), along with one second-place finish (2006). Cortland will host the regional – which can consist of either six, seven or eight teams – regardless of whether the Red Dragons qualify for the NCAA tournament this spring.

The Auburn Doubledays are a Class A minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Seven previous NCAA regionals have been held at the stadium, all since 2000. Ithaca College hosted six of those regionals, with Cortland serving as a co-host in 2005.
