Three SUNYAC Baseball Players Named to All-America Squad


 

 

SUNY Oneonta junior Dave Filak, SUNY Cortland senior third baseman Steve Nickel and junior left fielder Jason Simone have been selected as 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Div. III All-Americans. All three were selected to the All-America second team. The All-America teams were announced at a banquet on the eve of the NCAA Div. III World Series in Appleton, Wis.

This spring Filak was 8-1 overall with his only loss coming in the NCAA tournament to Farmingdale. He finished with a career low 2.00 ERA for the year and became the first player in the program’s history to record 100 strikeouts in a season recording 104. Filak allowed only 41 hits in 67-1/3 innings and held opponents to a .171 batting average.

Nickel has a .443 batting average with a team-high 10 home runs along with three triples, 11 doubles, 53 RBI and 55 runs scored. He shares the team lead in doubles and runs and is second in RBI. Nickel is also 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts and has a team-high .725 slugging percentage.

Simone is batting a team-high .464 with two homers, five triples, 11 doubles and 50 RBI. He has stolen 22 bases in 25 attempts and has struck out only four times in 179 plate appearances. Simone has also scored 38 runs.
