Oneonta Baseball bows out of SUNYAC tournament

Cortland Box Score | Brockport Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team lost a pair of games on the second day of the SUNYAC tournament at Cortland ending its conference title run. Oneonta (21-17) lost its first game to the host, 6-2, and then fell in the elimination game to Brockport, 12-3.

Cortland put together a five-run second inning that proved to be too much to overcome in game one today. After the first two batters reached via a walk and a hit batter, a throwing error by Oneonta starter, Ken Smith, loaded the bases with no outs.

Oneonta recorded the first out of the inning with a force out at home before Justin Fredenburg hit a single to right field to drive in the first two runs of the inning. Zack Graczyk then tripled to drive in two more before Graczyk scored on a double by John Adornetto to complete the scoring in the second.

Oneonta scored single runs in the fourth and ninth innings for its two runs in the game. Sophomore Bryan Marotta was hit by a pitch to start the fourth. He went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out by Michael DeCarr, and scored on a single to left center field by Michael Center.

DeCarr scored Oneonta’s run in the ninth via an RBI single by Eric Wells. DeCarr singled through the left side to lead off the inning. He went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on the two-out single.

Wells had two of Oneonta’s seven hits in the contest. Smith took the loss pitching five innings with seven walks and six strikeouts.

Today’s second game for Oneonta was a rematch of yesterday’s opening game of the tournament, which was a 5-2 win for the Red Dragons.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off starter Corey Andresen. Andresen lasted only 5-1/3 innings allowing six hits and four runs. He walked two batters and struck out three.

Brockport added a run in the fourth and led 3-0 entering the top of the fifth inning where Oneonta finally broke through with a pair of runs. The big hit came from junior Kevin Knack, who hit a one-out single to drive in freshman Sean Fruscio and junior Cody Hitt. Fruscio led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Hitt walked and both were sacrificed up one base by freshman Jake Robinson.

Brockport opened up a 7-2 lead with four runs in the sixth inning and put the game away with five more runs in the eighth inning.

Oneonta’s third run in the game was scored in the seventh inning when Robinson knocked in Hitt from third. Hit led off the inning with a double and went to third when the right fielder made an error in fielding the ball.
