Cortland's Angelo Centrone Finishes as NCAA Division III National Runner-up at 149 Pounds
PROVIDENCE, R.I.. – Cortland junior Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) finished as the national runner-up at 149 pounds at the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. The two-day event was held at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence.
After winning two matches on Friday to assure himself All-America honors, which go to the top eight finishers in each weight class, Centrone opened Saturday's action with an 8-6 win over Wartburg's Kyler Romero in the semifinals. The second seed, Centrone lost to top-seeded Hayden Brown of Johnson & Wales, 5-0, in the championship match.
Centrone finishes the season with a 30-1 record. The loss in the championship match snapped Centrone's 49-match winning streak - he went 19-0 as a sophomore in 2023-24 before an injury ended his season and he won his first 30 matches this season. Centrone has a career record of 78-9 through three seasons at Cortland.
Centrone was Cortland's first national finalist since Bobby Dierna won the 157-pound national title in 2017.
In the title match, Centrone and Brown were scoreless after the first period. Brown was down to start the second period and Centrone allowed an escape as the period opened. Brown registered a takedown with 1:19 left in the second to take a 4-0 lead and Centrone was unable to escape the rest of the period. Neither wrestler scored in the third and Brown earned a riding time point for the 5-0 final.
On Saturday morning in the semifinals, Centrone took a 3-0 lead over sixth-seeded Romero on a takedown with 46 seconds left in the first period. Romero escaped 11 seconds later and Centrone led 3-1 entering the second period. Centrone began the second with a quick escape and he recorded a takedown with 40 seconds left to go up 7-1.
Romero escaped three seconds later, and when Centrone conceded an escape to start the third the lead was cut to 7-3. Romero then got a takedown with 1:19 left and quickly let Centrone escape to make it 8-6. Centrone held on the rest of the way for the victory.
Cortland finished tied for 31st place out of 75 competing schools in the final team standings with 16 points. Centrone was the Red Dragons' lone competitor. Wartburg and Johnson & Wales shared the team title, each scoring 83.5 points. Johnson & Wales is the first school other than Wartburg or Augsburg to win at least a share of the team title since Ithaca claimed the team crown in 1994.
Xavier Pommells Earns All-America Honors Highlighting Day One at the NCAA Championships for Ithaca
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Ithaca College men's wrestling team had five wrestlers competing on the opening day of the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday at the Amica Mutal Pavilion. Junior grappler Xavier Pommells was able to achieve All-American status for the first time in his collegiate career as he highlighted the Bombers performances going 3-1 on the day.
First year Tomah Gummow opened his nationals in thrilling fashion. Neither him or Ausburg's Wyatt Kaczrowski was able to score other than their respective escapes, but it was Gummow who would earn the 4-1 sudden victory. Gummow would then matchup again the No. 7 seeded Gavin Bradley in his next bout, and it was Bradley who earned the fall at 2:44, which sent Gummow to the consolation bracket. The first year would then come up with a big time 4-2 decision as he defeated Loras College's Connor Fiser. However, he would drop a 16-0 tech fall to Alvernia's Keito Shaw and was eliminated from contention.
Returning All-American Isaias Torres had a tough opening bout against Garrett Totten from TCNJ. As predicted, it was close until Totten scored on a shot and he was able to hold on for the 5-1 decision. Torres would then begin his fight back within the consolation bracket taking down Daniel Haws (Centenary) via a 3-1 decision to improve to 26-8 on the season. Torres was then equally impressive staying alive and taking down Coby Haney in a 18-6 major decision. His All-American campaign would fall short to the hands of James Day who defeated the Bomber in a 5-0 decision.
At 165 lbs., Konrad Parker took on the No. 7 seeded Brayden Peet from Wisconsin-Whitewater in his opening bout and only was able to score a pair of escapes before falling 8-2. The junior then battled another tough opponent in Dustin Bohren (Loras) who was able to win in an 8-4 decision.
Senior Jackson Gray was on the losing end of a sudden victory, he fell to Zeb Gnida (Loras) by score of 8-5. In his first bout in the consolation bracket, Gray defeated Connor Gregory from Castleton in a 7-4 decision as he connected on the decisive takedown. Gray would then see his season and career come to an end as he fell in a fall to LJ Richardson (6:00).
It was another tight opening bout for an IC grappler as this time Xavier Pommells dropped a 5-3 decision to Kenny Ross who was the No. 2 seeded wrestler at 184 lbs. He was able to win in his next bout and kept Vincenzo Corvetto (Roanoke) off the scoreboard and took the 7-0 decision. Pommells would then achieve his first career All-American status by winning in a 7-6 decision over Austin Wetzel. Pommells was able to just beat the buzzer in the end of the third period and got a takedown to earn the win.
Wrestling will continue on Saturday at 11 a.m. with wrestlers looking to solidify their All-American places in their respective brackets
Jack Ryan and Carson LiCastri Finish Season at NCAA DIII Wrestling Championships, Ryan Becomes Two-Time All-American
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Oneonta wrestling's Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) and Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) wrapped up their season at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Providence, Rhode Island, on Friday and Saturday. Ryan became a two-time All-American at 184 pounds with a third-place finish as he went 5-1 with three majors and a sudden victory. LiCastri went 1-2 with a pin at 197 pounds in his first NCAA Championship appearance.
The two Red Dragons recorded 19.0 team points and finished tied for 21st with Southern Maine out of 75 institutions. The host team Johnson & Wales (RI) and Wartburg College (IA) were co-winners of the overall team event with 83.5 points. Oneonta placed third out of the Region 2 teams, Stevens was 18th at 22.0 points with six qualifiers and RIT was tied for 19th at 21.0 points with four qualifiers.
Ryan is now the sixth Red Dragon in program history to earn multiple All-American honors joining: Bryan Lambe (1967-68, 152 lbs.), Juan DeJesus (1980 & 1982, 167 lbs.), David Regina (1989 & 1991, 126 lbs.), Trevor Hiffa (2007-08, 285 lbs.), and James Bethel (2015, 2017-19, 285 lbs.).
The Trumbull, Connecticut native started the tournament with a 14-4 major against Baldwin Wallace's Remington Bauer. Ryan overpowered Bauer with four takedowns throughout the match with an escape in the third and the riding time bonus to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Ryan dropped a 7-2 decision to Elizabethtown's Ganon Smith. Smith went ahead 6-1 after the first period with a takedown and a three-point nearfall.
The three-time national qualifier became the two-time All-American with an 8-1 decision in the Blood Round against Stevens' Joel Martsinovsky. Ryan got a takedown within the first minute of action when he got behind Martsinovsky and wrapped around his hips for the three. The Red Dragon buried the Duck into the mat once more 30 seconds into the second period and went into the third up 6-0 with over 3:30 in riding time. Ryan chose to start the final period on the bottom to score an early escape and held off Martsinovsky's attacks for the win, he was called for stalling with under 40 seconds to go which awarded Martsinovsky his lone point.
Ryan started day two with an 8-0 major in the consolation quarterfinals against Ithaca's Xavier Pommells, a rematch of the Region 2 Finals. Neither wrestler wanted to give the other an opportunity to attack and they stayed tied up for most of the match. Ryan had the first choice and started the second period on the bottom. He scored the escape less than 10 seconds into the period for the 1-0 lead, then the two went back into the collar tie up. In the closing seconds of the match, Ryan got Pommells off balanced and landed him on his back for a takedown and a four-point near fall for the major. The win guaranteed Ryan a better finish than his last year national tournament appearance (7th place).
In the consolation semifinals, Ryan defeated Merchant Marine's Tyler Withers in an 8-0 major and moved on to the third-place match. His dominance continued with a takedown in the first period, then he scored a reversal in the second to go up 5-0 while he brushed off Withers' takedown attempts. Ryan started the third period on top and recorded a three-point nearfall to seal the win.
Ryan's third-place victory was a 4-1 sudden victory in a rematch against Elizabethtown's Smith. Similar to his match against Pommells, neither Ryan nor Smith gave the other many opportunities for a takedown. Ryan initially scored a takedown in the first period until the officials reviewed the replay and took away the points. The two both chose to start on the bottom and scored an escape to end the third period tied at one. Roughly 40 seconds into the first overtime period, Ryan got ahold of Smith's right ankle and brought him down with a single leg takedown. Ryan kept his arms wrapped around Smith's legs for an extended period of time before the refs awarded him the three for the win.
LiCastri came up short in a 5-2 sudden victory in his opening match against TCNJ's DJ Henry. He took a 2-1 lead in third period with a penalty point and an escape with 50 seconds remaining, however Henry tied it with riding time bonus and scored a takedown at the start of the overtime period.
The Easton, Connecticut native bounced back and dismantled Messiah's Sawyer Dereszynski with a 6:04 fall for his first NCAA Championship win. LiCastri built up a 10-1 lead after the first period with a pair of explosive takedowns. He had another takedown in the second period then capitalized on his fourth takedown in the third for the pin.
LiCastri dropped his second match on day one against Elizabethtown's Will Davis in an 11-6 decision. Davis scored a couple takedowns in the first two periods, however LiCastri answered with three escapes then a takedown to trail 7-6 entering the third. Davis fought off LiCastri in the final period and recorded one more takedown with 30 seconds remaining.
End of Season Records and Leaders
Ryan finished the season 35-2 with 17 falls, two tech falls, six majors and a sudden victory. He was crowned the New York State Collegiate Champion, the SUNYAC Champion, and the Region 2 Qualifier Champion at 184 pounds.
LiCastri finished the season 40-7 overall with 22 pins, six tech falls, and four majors. He was the New York State Collegiate Champion at 197, received All-SUNYAC honors with a second-place finish at SUNYAC Championships, and placed third at the Region 2 Qualifier for his first NCAA Championship appearance. LiCastri finished tied for second in NCAA with 22 falls, Merchant Marine's Withers scored two falls in the tournament to finish with 23.
Junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) finished the season as the NCAA leader in tech falls with 23, one ahead of Johnson and Wales' 125-pounder Joziah Fry. Fry entered the tournament needing three tech falls to surpass Leonard, since Leonard owned the tie breaker, which is least combined time, and Fry showed his mind was set on being the NCAA leader.
He gained a tech fall in his first match to get within two. During his second match, Fry was ahead 21-7 and needed one more point for another tech fall. He thought he got a takedown in the closing seconds for the tech, however the officials did not give it to him, and he won the match. Despite the victory that moved him into the championship semifinals, Fry told his coach to throw the challenge brick to review the play to get the extra points. The coach agreed to challenge the call, but the refs upheld their decision, Johnson and Wales lost their challenge for the remainder of the tournament and Leonard remained the NCAA tech fall leader.
