Monnier and Smith Tabbed Soccer Players of the Week
The State University of New York Athletic Conference has announced the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Players of the week for the week of September 5-11. Ryan Smith (Fairport, NY) won the men’s honor after leading Fredonia this past week, while Cortland’s Pam Monnier (East Northport, NY) was named the women’s recipient.
Smith, a junior midfielder, was honored after scoring a hat trick and assisting another goal in three Blue Devil victories last week. He registered his first point of the season when he set up Tyler Williams in the 50th minute for an insurance goal in a 2-0 win over Geneva College on Sept. 6. On September 10, the forward gave Fredonia a 1-0 lead off a corner kick in the 32 minute and then tied the game at 2-2 when he chipped the ball into the net in the 61st minute. He finished his career night with his third goal just 20 seconds into overtime on a shot from just inside the 18-yard line. With the win Fredonia claimed the Clarion Classic Championship and Smith was named to the all-tournament team. He leads the team with four goals and seven points on the season. Fredonia will look for its fourth straight win when they host Nazareth on Tuesday night at 7pm.
Monnier was tabbed SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after amassing 11 saves in a 1-1 week for the Red Dragons. She earned her second shutout of the season with two saves in a 2-0 win over Centenary in day one of the William Smith Heron Cup. She then stopped nine shots in a 1-0 setback to nationally third-ranked William Smith on Sunday. For the season, Monnier has a 0.50 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. Cortland hosts Hamilton at 4pm on Wednesday.
