Stephanie Vega Selected as SUNYAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 6.

Vega earned her program-record-extending 11th and 12th shutouts of the season on the week, helping New Paltz claim its first-ever conference title by beating SUNY Fredonia, 1-0, in the semifinal round of the 2011 SUNYAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament before besting SUNY Cortland by the same score in the championship match. During the week, she stopped all five shots that were put on goal, pushing her season save percentage to .905. The Blue Devils were unable to put a single shot on goal on Wednesday, but the Red Dragons fired five shots on frame in the title game on Saturday, all of which Vega turned aside. As a result of her excellence in goal, specifically late in the second half against a charging Cortland team Saturday, she was named the Tournament MVP.

New Paltz (13-6-2, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) faces No. 12 Lynchburg College in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament on either Friday, Nov. 11, or Saturday, Nov. 12, at Lynchburg. The team's 13 victories are the most ever achieved in a single season in program history, and 15th-year head coach Colleen Bruley notched her 100th career win on Saturday with the Hawks' triumph over Cortland.
