Devils, Cortland to help 'Strikeout Cancer'

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- When Fredonia State plays host to Cortland in women's softball on April 19, both teams will be playing against a common opponent.

The Blue Devils and Red Dragons will be wearing special t-shirts to call attention to the battle to Strikeout Cancer, an initiative sponsored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The Blue Devils will wear pink shirts with royal blue lettering and numbers (see above), while the Red Dragons will wear gray shirts with pink printing. The Fredonia State players will also wear pink socks.

In addition to having a chance to make donations, fans attending the game will also be able to participate in a silent auction of sports memorabilia -- including items from Buffalo professional sports teams.

All proceeds will go to the Alex Hollander Education Fund. Alex is the son of former Buffalo State head coach Sandy Hollander, who waged a six-year battle with cancer before passing away in 2012. She coached the Bengals for 24 seasons.

The event has been organized by Blue Devil head coach Tony Ciccarello, who held several Strikeout Cancer games -- one against Fredonia State -- while he was head coach at Geneseo.
