SUNYAC Announces 2014 Softball Annual Awards

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is pleased to announce the 2014 individual award winners and all-conference teams. Cortland's Meaghan Kohler has been named the 2014 SUNYAC Player of the year, Oneonta's Sabrina DeAngelis has been selected as the Rookie and Pitcher of the Year while Oneonta's head coach Sara Headley has been honored as the Sandra Hollander Coach of the Year as voted on by the conference coaches.

Senior outfielder, Kohler finished her season with a .323 batting average in 133 at bats. She compiled 35 RBI and 43 hits including 11 doubles, nine homeruns and one triple in 43 games. Kohler helped lead Cortland to a No. 2 seed going into the SUNYAC Tournament where the Red Dragons made their way to the championship game.

In her first year, DeAngelis helped the Oneonta Red Dragons softball team win their first SUNYAC Tournament Championship since 2004 and secure the automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. She was named the SUNYAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player after going 3-0 with wins over New Paltz, Brockport and Cortland. DeAngelis has a 1.63 ERA, struck out 110 batters and held her opponents to just 24 earned runs in 145.2 innings pitched thus far. Sabrina will continue her freshman year playing in the NCAA Tournament when she travels to Ithaca to play Rowan in the first round this weekend.

In her first year at Oneonta, coach Headley led her team to win the SUNYAC Softball Championship Title after a 10-year gap since the program won in 2004. She will lead her team into the first round of the NCAA Tournament this weekend as they take on Rowan. Headley joined the Red Dragons after spending 10 years as the head coach at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. Headley is assisted by John Speranzi and Katie Boshart.
