Oneonta bats silenced in NCAA opening loss to Rowan

The SUNY Oneonta bats were silenced today by a solid pitching performance from Rowan starter, Krysti Maronski, as the Red Dragons fell to Rowan University, 7-0, in the opening game of the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional at Ithaca College.  Oneonta managed only a couple of hits, which was its second lowest output offensively of the season.  The loss also snapped its 12-game winning streak, which included the four wins that earned them the SUNYAC championship, which put them in the NCAA tournament.

Oneonta (29-10) put together its only threat in the game in the sixth inning when it had runners at second and third, but couldn't push the runs across.  Freshman Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and junior Meaghan Foster (Walden/Valley Central) both singled to start the inning.  Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) then moved the two runners over into scoring position.  Jenn Brocco then grounded out before Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) popped up to second base to end the inning.

Rowan (35-10) scored three runs in the second inning and added a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to account for its runs.  Three critical errors for Oneonta led to four unearned runs for the Profs, who will play Ithaca tomorrow at 11am in the game between the two winners today.  Ithaca defeated Penn State Altoona 2-1 in the second game today.

Oneonta will play Penn State tomorrow at 1:30pm in an elimination game.  The winner of that game will play again at 4pm against the loser of the Rowan/Ithaca game in the second elimination game tomorrow.  The winner will play in the regional championship game on Sunday at noon.
