Martens and DiGiacomo Voted SUNYAC Volleyball Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC recognizes Cortland's Mikenzie Martens and New Paltz's Cate DiGiacomo as the 2022 Women's Volleyball Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year as nominated and voted on by the conference sports information directors.

Martens is a sophomore physical education major with a 4.0 overall GPA. In 2022 she was named to the third team All-SUNYAC, she earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and she was the Elite 20 volleyball award winner. In 22 matches Martens led the Red Dragons with 313 digs (4.1 per set) and .957 serve reception percentage. Cortland won the 2022 conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament before losing to eventual national champion Juniata. The team finished with an overall record of 22-6.

DiGiacomo was an AVCA All-America honorable mention, AVCA All-Region and All-SUNYAC selection after captaining her team to a 20-win season, a regional ranking and No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC tournament in just her second season. She led the team with 762 assist and eclipsed the 1,000-assist threshold in just 53 matches played, ranking eighth in program history. She also totaled 24 aces, 165 digs and 24 blocks this past fall, all while holding a GPA of 3.88 as a communication disorders major.

During each season, the conference honors student-athletes for their efforts in their sport, as well as their academics. In order to be eligible for the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award student-athletes must prove both academic and athletic excellence by obtaining a minimum 3.30 overall GPA, be a starter or significant reserve for their team, and be at least a sophomore. The SUNYAC Scholar Athlete Award began in 2016-17.
