2012 Baseball Tournament Quick Facts

 

The 2012 SUNYAC Baseball Tournament field has been set, with four teams battling for a chance to win the postseason conference championship and earn the SUNYAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
The four-team, double-elimination baseball tournament begins Friday May 4 as top-seeded Cortland plays fourth-seeded Plattsburgh at 12 p.m. Brockport, the second seed, will face third-seeded Oneonta at 3:30 p.m. Three games are scheduled for Saturday, starting at 10 am, and the championship round begins Sunday at noon, with another game to follow, if needed.

Tournament Quick Facts
From 1981-1997, the league consisted of two divisions, with each division winner playing for the conference’s postseason crown. In 1998, the SUNYAC converted from two divisions into one seven-team league, with the postseason champion determined by a double-elimination tournament. The league grew to eight teams in 2003 with the addition of Plattsburgh but dropped back to seven teams in 2009 with the departure of SUNYIT.

-The first two double-elimination tournaments featured three teams before going to four teams in 2000.
 
-Three of the four teams that qualified for the 2011 SUNYAC Tournament return again this season, while Plattsburgh replaces New Paltz in the bracket.
 
-Cortland has been the No. 1 seed every year since 1998 and the only school to host the SUNYAC tournament.
 
-Brockport is the only other school besides Cortland to win a SUNYAC Tournament Title in the 13 year history of the tournament (2004 and 2010).
 
-Brockport is making its 11th straight and 13th overall appearance in the post-season tournament. Oneonta is also making its 13th overall appearance in the post-season.
 
-The Golden Eagles are the No. 2 seed for the seventh time and Oneonta serves as the No. 3 seed for the fourth time.
 
-Friday will mark the 14th post-season match-up between Brockport and Oneonta with the Golden Eagles holding an 8-5 advantage over the Red Dragons. The Golden Eagles also have a winning tournament record of 5-0 against Plattsburgh.
 
-Cortland is 41-6 in SUNYAC tournament play with winning records against current tournament participants Brockport (15-5), Oneonta (14-1) and Plattsburgh (6-0).
 
-Oneonta and is 5-0 against Plattsburgh in the tournament.
 
-In total, Cortland has claimed the conference title 29 times since the SUNYAC began sponsoring baseball in 1959. Oneonta has won six titles, Brockport has captured five titles and Plattsburgh is looking for its first ever SUNYAC Championship.
