SUNYAC Makes a Mark on NCAA Final Baseball Rankings in 2012

The 2012 SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, Cortland junior Ray Angelucci, concluded the season ranked fourth in NCAA victories (12) and finished 14th with an earned run average of 1.5. The All-American set a new school record in wins and totaled 69 strikeouts.

Angelucci wasn’t the only pitcher around the conference certainly who made a mark on the national rankings. Senior teammate Aaron Schuldt fanned 94 batters to rank 16th in Division III. He finished with an 8-2 record and 1.80 ERA in 13 starts as he allowed 65 hits and 26 walks in 90 innings.

Brockport’s Justin McCarthy registered 10 saves on the mound to rank third overall. He held opponents to a .173 batting average in 30 innings pitched while appearing in a team-high 18 games and was the first Golden Eagle to be named All-American since 2004.

At the plate Cortland’s Andrew Pezzuto totaled seven triples to rank 13th and the SUNYAC Player of the year, John Adornetto, drew 33 walks to rank 18th.

On the team side of the rankings, Cortland ended the year with 45 sacrifice flies to lead all Division III teams in the category. The Plattsburgh Cardinals put together 45 double plays on the year to rank fifth in double plays per game (1.5) and the Fredonia Blue Devils totaled 93 stolen bases to finish 15th with 2.66 per game.
