Abby Martin Chosen as Softball Academic All-American; Three on All-District Squad

SUNY Cortland senior softball first baseman/pitcher Abby Martin (Oswego) has been named to the second team of the 2012 Capital One Division III Softball Academic All-America team. The team was chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

In addition, Martin is one of three Cortland players chosen to CoSIDA’s Capital One Division III Academic All-District first team for District 3 along with senior shortstop Jessica Harman (Penfield) and sophomore outfielder Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional). Under a new structure this year, NCAA Division III schools are no longer combined with other divisions for CoSIDA academic awards. In Division III, District 3 encompasses all schools in New York State.

Martin is a kinesiology major who entered the spring semester with a 3.61 cumulative grade point average. She batted 393 with five home runs and 44 RBI and as a pitcher went 12-4 with a 2.58 ERA and 97 strikeouts.

Harman, an academic all-district selection for the second straight year, batted .347 with 15 doubles and 20 RBI. A kinesiology major, Harman entered the spring semester with a 3.84 cumulative GPA.

Kohler is a criminology major who brought a 3.51 GPA into the spring semester. She batted .359 and set school records with 17 home runs and 68 RBI.

Cortland finished the season 41-10 for its fourth straight 40-win season and qualified for the NCAA Div. III tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
