Geneseo Advances Past Fredonia in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

 

Sophomore Connor Fedge paced a balanced scoring attack with 11 points on 5-8 shooting to lead the host #3 seeded Geneseo Blue Knights past the #6 Fredonia Blue Devils (13-12) in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC Tournament, 60-49. Sophomore Thomas Decker hit 2-4 from the arc and 4-4 from the line for 10 points, junior Ryan Riefenhauser collected nine points and eight rebounds, senior Mike Hoy hit both of his shots from downtown on the way to eight points and first year Gordon Lyons netted eight points, including 4-4 from the line in the final 1:36.
 
Senior Julius Bryant scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting with 11 rebounds to pace Fredonia and senior Leonard Smith added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Blue Devils shot just 35.2% (19-54) from the floor and 3-19 (15.8%) from the arc for the game.
 
Geneseo raced out to an 18-8 lead on a three-pointer by Decker with 10:29 to play in the first half, but the Blue Devils rallied with eight straight points to cut the lead to 18-16 on a three-pointer by senior Damien Goodwin. Hoy hit a three-pointer with 5:27 to go to give Geneseo a 26-20 lead, but Fredonia scored the final four points of the half to trail, 30-28.
 
In the second half, sophomore Matt Curry hit an early three for Geneseo to give the Blue Knights a 35-28 lead. Fredonia got a three-point play from Bryant to cut the lead to 37-35 with 14:04 to play, but Geneseo used a 16-7 spurt over the next 11 minutes to take a 53-42 lead on a layup by Fedge with 3:02 left and the game was never closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Blue Knights went 7-8 from the line in the final 1:36.
 
Geneseo moves to 14-12 on the season and will play #2 Cortland in the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. at Oswego.
