Buffalo State Men's Hockey Holds Off Canton To Advance To SUNYAC Semifinals

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State men's hockey team held off the SUNY Canton Roos in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals tonight with a final scored of 6-4 at the Ice Arena.

- Vadim Kiriakov (Tyumen, Russia/Altay Ust-Kamenogorsk) added a goal and two assists.
- Tyler Penree (New Hartford, NY/Vermont Lumberjacks), Tommy Chunchukov (Hendersonville, TN/Yorkton Terriers), and Sutton Murray (Rochester Hills, MI/Pembroke Lumber Kings) all scored for the Bengals.
- Jason Kwestel (Rockaway, NJ/Valley Wildcats) and Michael Marquez (Upland, CA/Yarmouth Mariners) each tallied a pair of assists.
- Marcus Cumberworth (Surrey, BC/Olds Grizzlys) made 26 saves in goal in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State got the scoring started less than three minutes into the action as Murray slapped in the puck from the air right in front of the net.
- Kiriakov scored shortly after before Micale netted his first goal on an empty net opportunity to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead after the first period.
- Canton came back in the second with a pair of goals to cut the Bengal lead to just one.
- Penree found the back of the net for a second straight game to give the Bengals some cushion heading into the final 20 minutes of action.
- Micale and Chunchukov each scored early in the third period to give Buffalo State a 6-2 lead.
- After a misconduct on each side, Canton would take advantage with an extra attacker and score a pair of goals to make the game 6-4.
- Buffalo State was able to hold off Canton to advance to the SUNYAC Semifinals for the second time in three seasons.
FOR THE FOES
- Logan Kelly tallied a pair of goals and an assist.
- Nate Hopkins made 25 saves in goal in the effort.

The Bengals advanced to the SUNYAC Semifinals where they will travel to Oswego on Saturday to battle the Lakers.
