Currently with ten member institutions, the eight original schools included Albany, Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, New Paltz, Oneonta, Plattsburgh and Potsdam when they originally formed in 1958 as the New York State Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NYSIAC). Geneseo and Fredonia joined the NYSIAC in 1959 and the conference changed its name to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in 1963. Former member schools include Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and SUNYIT.
The conference members compete in a total of twenty sports, nine men's and eleven women's which include: both men's and women's basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, swimming and diving and soccer along with baseball, ice hockey, softball, field hockey, tennis and volleyball. SUNYAC teams have won numerous National Titles in twelve of those twenty sports as shown below.
