Cortland sweeps weekly awards for softball

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its Softball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week. The Red Dragons sweep this week's awards, with Cortland senior Skyler Hoyt chosen as this week's Athlete of the Week, and teammate Sam Van Dorn chosen as this week's Pitcher of the Week.

Hoyt went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored in Cortland's 6-1, eight-inning victory over nationally 20th-ranked Kean University onSaturday. The senior captain hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1, and recorded an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. Hoyt also recorded 16 putouts at first base, as 17 of Kean's 24 outs were groundouts. For the week, Hoyt batted .429 with two RBI, one run and one steal, and recorded no defensive mistakes in 27 chances.

Van Dorn allowed one run over eight innings in the Red Dragons' victory at Kean University. The sophomore gave up seven hits and one walk, and struck out three. Van Dorn gave up five hits throughout the first three innings, but permitted only two hits and no runs over the last five frames. In an eighth inning at-bat, she singled to start Cortland's five-run rally to defeat the Cougars, 6-1.

The Red Dragons' record now sits at 6-6. The team will travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to face King's College in a double header this Tuesday.
