CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team used first-half goals by Piper Klammer (Mahopac) and Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) to overcome an early deficit, defeating visiting Oneonta 2-1 in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon on Holloway Field. Cortland is now 11-3-4 on the year, while Oneonta is 6-10-1. Cortland will head to top-seeded New Paltz on Saturday to play for the conference championship.
Klammer netted her ninth goal of the season, while Vuotto's goal was her 11th of the year. Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) contributed two assists, while Vuotto and Katie Diem (Fairport) each added an assist apiece. Kristen Spenal (Dumont, NJ) made two saves in goal for Cortland.
Oneonta's goal was scored by Keira Dashnow, and assisted by Sara Kealey. Goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan made eight saves for Oneonta.
Oneonta shocked Cortland with a goal in the second minute off a corner kick, as Kealey sent a left-footed cross to the center of the penalty area, where Dashnow was able to redirect the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with a header to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead.
Cortland slowly began to gain possession and momentum, and was rewarded with an equalizer in the 12th minute, as Cosenza fed Vuotto down the left side with a through ball. The sophomore Vuotto reached the ball just before the end line, and crossed towards the center of the goal, with Klammer knocking a shot into the bottom right corner to tie the score.
In the 16th minute, Vuotto gave Cortland the lead by poking a shot with her right foot after Diem played a short pass to Cosenza on a free kick, and Cosenza sent a back heel pass towards the center of the goal.
Cortland had one other shot on target in the first half, which Meehan was able to save comfortably as the score remained 2-1 in Cortland's favor at halftime.
Klammer nearly made it 3-1 in the 47th minute, but her shot went just wide of the post to the right. In the following minutes, Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) had a pair of shots saved by Meehan, including one to the bottom left corner that squirted through Meehan's fingers initially before she was able to collect it on a second attempt.
Spendal was tasked with making a pair of comfortable saves in the second half for Cortland to maintain the advantage.
