UNDER ARMOUR AD OF THE YEAR AWARD RELEASE

CLEVELAND – SUNY Geneseo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Mike Mooney was named a recipient of the 2019 Under Armour AD of the Year Award, announced Wednesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Mooney will receive the award during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on June 11 at NACDA's 54th-Annual Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla. The award highlights the efforts of athletic directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.

Mooney is in his eighth year as the Knights' director of athletics and has been a member of the college's community for 32 years after also serving as the Knights' men's soccer coach for 26 seasons.

Under his watch, the department has experienced unprecedented success and growth. The Knights finished 11th in the 2017-18 Learfield Sports Director's Cup  standings, which measure the overall excellence of the 450 Division III athletic programs in the country. Also the highest ranked public institution, it was Geneseo's best finish ever and marked the sixth-straight time the program moved up compared to the previous year. Geneseo also won its fourth-consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the top overall program in the league, after winning a record 13 out of a possible 19 conference championships. Through the completion of the winter season, the Knights have won eight more conference titles in 2018-19.

Along with his head coaching duties, he had previously served as associate director for six years (2004-10) following a five-year stint as assistant director (1999-04) while also serving as an instructor in the department.

The winningest coach in Geneseo men's soccer history, Mooney compiled a 262-186-47 record and guided the program to three SUNYAC Championships as well as its only two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2004, he led the Knights to a No. 4 final national ranking and a school-record 17-5-2 mark that included an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals following a 1-0 double-overtime upset of perennial-power Williams (Mass.).

Following one season as the head men's soccer coach at Erie Community College, Mooney was hired to lead the Geneseo men's soccer program in 1985. He also worked as a residence hall director for his first year on campus before serving a five-year term as director of intramurals and recreation (1986-91) and an eight-year stint as a facility manager (1991-99) in addition to his coaching duties.

Mooney is a past president of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and continues to serve on numerous committees within the league. He also served on the NCAA Division III Soccer committee from 2001-05, including three years as the national chair, and is currently in the first year on the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer committee as the East Region Chair. Mooney is also a past chair of the Division III Men's Soccer All-America selection committee.
