SUNYAC announces Softball Athletes of the Week

CORTLAND N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Oswego's Rebecca Vilchez (Franklin Square, N.Y.) as the Softball Pitcher of the Week and Oneonta's Dana Del Genio (New Hartford, NY) as the Softball Athlete of the Week.

Vilchez helped the Lakers to a 6-0 week in the conference, appearing on the mound in five of the contests. As Oswego defeated Plattsburgh 9-1 (six innings) and 4-2 in a doubleheader on Tuesday, the junior spent seven innings on the mound. She began by recording the win in game one, owning a no-hitter heading into the fifth inning while striking out four. She then recorded the save in game two, allowing just one batter to reach base in her final two innings of work. Vilchez earned the win in the team's first game of a doubleheader at Potsdam on Wednesday. She gave up just one hit, while striking out three to secure the 8-0 victory. As the Lakers took to the field Sunday for a held off matchup with Buffalo State, Vilchez earned the win in game one (2-0), playing a complete game, allowing just three hits, walking none. She also earned her third save of the season in game two (9-2), allowing no hits. In all, the pitcher went 3-0-2 on the week, playing in 21.2 innings. She allowed just seven hits and two walks, while fanning eight for an era of .32.

Del Genio led the offense for Oneonta last week, as the Red Dragons posted a 5-1 record to get back in the playoff mix. She had 11 hits including four doubles and a triple and totaled eight runs and added four RBI. In the process of leading Oneonta in average (.478) and slugging (.739), Del Genio became the program's all-time leader for runs scored (123) and total bases (268). Del Genio currently leads the Red Dragons in every offensive category including her .441 batting average.
