SUNYAC Softball Championship Day 2 Recap

CORTLAND, N.Y. - After day two of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Tournament three teams remain in the fight for the 2019 title. 

Game 5: Cortland vs. Oneonta
Box Score

Cortland topped Oneonta, 9-2, to end their season 16-21-1 overall. Sabrina Caputo led Cortland going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Hannah Thornhill also added two hits and two RBI for Cortland. Cady Walts was on the mound for the Cortland Red Dragons where she struck out six and allowed just three hits and two runs.

Game 6: Geneseo vs. New Paltz

New Paltz was up 3-2 going into the seventh inning, but Geneseo did not give in tying the game on a throwing error. The Knights then scored the winning run on a second throwing error. Alyssa Persich went 2-for-4 for Geneseo while Julia Dispigna had two hits for the Hawks. 

Game 7: New Paltz vs. Oswego
Box Score

Oswego avoided elimination as Brianna Harrington led the Lakers with three hits and three RBI including a home run to close the game at 6-3 in the seventh inning.

Game 8: Cortland vs. Geneseo
Box Score

Geneseo defeated the top seed and host Cortland, 4-2 to remain undefeated in the double elimination tournament. Danni Napoli led the Knights with three hits adding one RBI.

Cortland will play Oswego at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The winner will player Geneseo at 1:30 p.m.

Elite 20

The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. New Paltz's junior outfielder and biochemistry major, Nicole DePaola was honored with this award Friday.
