SUNYAC announces 2019 softball awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to announce its annual softball awards for the 2019 season. All awards are nominated and voted on by the conference coaches.
 
Player of the Year: Danni Napoli, Geneseo
In her senior year, Napoli will go down in Geneseo history as the all-time home run hitter (23). In conference play, she leads the league in slugging percentage (.852), on base percentage (.574), and is second with an overall batting average of .481. Napoli is also tied at the top spot in the conference in extra base hits (13), tied for second in total bases (46), tied for first in runs scored (21), and tied for second with 12 walks. During week five of the season she was named SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week. In her final year, Napoli notched 50 hits overall with seven home runs, 38 RBI, and 38 runs. Napoli continues her career in NCAA play this weekend after the Knights received an at-large bid into the tournament.
 
Pitcher of the Year: Sam Van Dorn, Cortland
In the circle, senior Van Dorn recorded seven wins in conference play for the Red Dragons. She notched an impressive 1.29 ERA this season in the SUNYAC, allowing only 59 hits and striking out 34 in 59.2 innings pitched. She gave up one home run and only 11 walks. Overall, she allowed 51 runs, 132 hits, two home runs, and currently holds a 1.65 ERA. Van Dorn will continue her senior season as the Red Dragons host the NCAA first round this weekend.
 
 
  
 
 Rookie of the Year: Katie Quagliana, New Paltz
In her rookie season, Quagliana recorded 13 wins overall on the mound for the Hawks. The freshman pitcher finished with a 2.46 ERA overall. She struck out 33  batters in 111 innings. Quagliana was also selected as SUNYAC Softball Pitcher of the Week three times during the 2019 season.
 
  
 
 
 
 Sandra Hollander Coach of the Year: Julie Lenhart, Cortland
In her final season as head coach of the Cortland softball team, Coach Lenhart walks away with another SUNYAC Championship title under her belt, her 12th overall. The Cortland Red Dragons finished regular season conference play 15-3 to gain the No. 1 seed and hosting rights in the 2019 SUNYAC softball shampionship tournament. The Red Dragons are currently 29-14 overall. Coach Lenhart and her team will not only be advancing to the 2019 Division III softball NCAA tournament, but will also be hosting a four-team regional. This will be Coach Lenhart's 17th NCAA appearance with Cortland, 11th in 13 years.
