Game of the Week: Knights take down Red Dragons in OT upset

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Game of the Week comes from the Geneseo women's lacrosse team's thrilling overtime upset over No. 18 Cortland last Saturday. The Knights and Red Dragons traded goals back and forth all game, but it was Geneseo that came out on top, winning 19-18 in overtime.

1st Half

Geneseo was able to strike first and go up 1-0 four minutes into the game with a goal from Laura Skrzypczyk assisted by Tessa Doody. Cortland came right back to tie the game with a Carly Stone draw control and goal.

Both teams illuminated the scoreboard in the first half and the game went back and forth with tie scores at 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and finally 8. Five different players from each team were able to get on the scoresheet. The first half was as even as it could get and the second half would be more of the same.

2nd Half

The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 4-1 run to build its largest lead of the game, 12-9, with 21:42 left in regulation. Cortland held a 14-11 lead with about 18 minutes left to play as Geneseo came storming back scoring three quick goals in a row evening up the game. The Red Dragons broke a 15-15 tie with two goals in a 16-second span to lead, 17-15, with 7:20 on the clock. The Knights did not go away just yet as they scored three-straight goals to take the lead with under three minutes to play.

Cortland tied the game at 18 all on Lexie Meager's goal with 1:45 left in regulation to force overtime. The Red Dragons won the first draw, but Geneseo first-year goalie Margaret Rosaschi made one of her 10 saves on the day to keep the Knights alive.

After Geneseo got the ball back up the field, Hannah Marafioti dumped a pass to Nicole Voci behind the Red Dragon's net. Voci made her way around the right post and found Marafioti cutting away from a defender in front for a crossing shot inside the left post for the game-winner.

This is only Cortland's second time losing to a conference opponent in their last 90 contests.

Player of the Game: Last year's SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Hannah Marafioti finished with a stat line of eight goals on only nine shots with two assists and one caused turnover.

What's Next: Geneseo will travel to Buffalo State and Potsdam this week for a chance to clinch home field advantage for the SUNYAC tournament.

Cortland will be at home against Oneonta and Brockport as the Red Dragons look to get their conference winning streak rolling again.

You can watch Marafioti's game-winning goal in the video below, at 2:24.
