Geneseo Takes 2022-23 SUNYAC Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup

Geneseo Takes 2022-23 SUNYAC Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC releases its final Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2022-23 academic year. The top two institutions after the winter season remained at the top following the spring championships with Geneseo at No. 1 followed by Cortland. New Paltz moved up a spot from No. 4 to No. 3 after the spring.

The cup was named for Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.

This is Geneseo's seventh consecutive time winning the Commissioner's Cup and eighth time overall. This spring, the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams captured the program's 10th and 15th overall titles respectively. Softball won its third-straight and fifth overall conference crown while the men's and women's lacrosse teams both captured the 2023 SUNYAC title. This was the first time that the women were league champions and the men raised the trophy for the fourth time overall and first since 2007.

The Cortland baseball and women's lacrosse teams finished the regular season No. 1 in the conference while men's lacrosse and softball were second. The men's outdoor track and field team finished second at the SUNYAC championship meet and the women were third. The women's tennis team was also the third seed after regular season play and finished their season with a loss to Oneonta in the semifinals.

The New Paltz Hawks took the third spot after the women's tennis team finished the regular-season as the top seed and then went on to win the conference crown for the eighth time overall. The softball team clinched its first-ever No. 1 seed after the regular season and hosted the championship tournament for the first time in program history. The men's lacrosse team also made its first appearance in the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed while women's lacrosse was No. 5.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
