Buffalo State names Renee Carlineo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Buffalo State Sports Information Department

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner has announced the hiring of Renee Carlineo as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, effective June 1, 2021, making her the first woman to occupy this role.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Renee back to Buffalo State to lead our department of athletics," said Conway-Turner.  "She is a talented leader with a strong commitment and passion for the mission and values of Division III athletics, and I am proud to have her be the first woman to serve in this important position at Buffalo State."

"Renee was truly impressive throughout the interview process as she presented a clear and attainable vision for the future of Bengals' athletics," said vice president for student affairs Dr. Tim Gordon. "She is a perfect fit for Buffalo State and is a great hire for the college's continued commitment to creating inclusive and representational leadership."

"I quickly learned how special Buffalo State College was during my five previous years as a Bengal," Carlineo said. "Buffalo State Athletics embodies the values of opportunity, community, cultural diversity and growth through competition – everything Division III athletics is meant to be. I am honored to return to lead the Bengals and incredibly excited to see what we will achieve together. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Conway-Turner, Dr. Gordon, the search committee, and the entire staff for entrusting me with this opportunity."

A native of Corning, N.Y, Carlineo returns for her second stint at Buffalo State, previously serving as the Bengals' head strength and conditioning coach and assistant women's lacrosse coach from 2007-12.

Most recently, Carlineo served as the associate vice president of athletics at Elmira College since 2019.  At Elmira, she was responsible for 22 NCAA Division III programs in addition to varsity clubs, campus recreation, intramurals, and physical education.  She also served as a member of the President's senior leadership cabinet and is on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) for women's lacrosse.

Carlineo previously served as an associate athletics director at Rochester Institute of Technology where she was responsible for the scheduling, event management, transportation, travel budgets and daily operations for the institution's 21 NCAA Division III and two NCAA Division I programs.  She also had responsibilities of site administration for NCAA tournament events, overseeing student-athlete conduct, supervising professional staff and assisting in NCAA compliance.

Carlineo has a significant background in development, serving as the leadership giving officer at Ithaca College before being promoted to the director of family giving within the office of college relations and advancement.  As a major gift officer, she successfully closed major gifts that established the first endowment for a women's athletic program, as well as transformational gifts from alumni and parents to support Ithaca's endowment, annual fund, financial aid and intercollegiate athletics.

She previously worked as the associate director in the office of alumni engagement at Lehigh University, located in Bethlehem, Pa. During her tenure, she was responsible for guiding portions of the national engagement plan during the largest campaign in Lehigh history.

Carlineo began her career as a graduate assistant lacrosse coach at her alma mater, Ithaca College.  She played stints as a goalkeeper with the women's lacrosse team at Ithaca after transferring from Penn State University and during a year abroad in Queensland, Australia.  Carlineo completed her bachelor's degree in sport psychology with minors in exercise physiology and coaching from Ithaca and a master's in sport & exercise science with a concentration in performance psychology.
