SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its 2021 women's tennis annual awards including the Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player, Doubles Team of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams as voted on by the conference coaches.
Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player - Trinity Chow, New Paltz
In the 2021 spring season, Chow, the junior from Glen Cove, N.Y. went 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference divisional play at first singles. She was undefeated in doubles play in the conference (4-0) and overall (5-0). Chow helped lead her team to its third consecutive championship crown, the third of her career. She was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. This is the third season that Chow has been honored with the Peter J. Cahill MVP award.
Doubles Team of the Year - Trinity Chow / Laura Koob, New Paltz
The No. 1 doubles team of Chow and Koob went undefeated this season, 4-0 in conference play and 5-0 overall. They were named to the All-Tournament team at No. 1 doubles after defeating Oneonta, 8-4 to help the Hawks win the 2021 SUNYAC championship.
Rookie of the Year - Tatiana Barnett, New Paltz
In her first season with the Hawks, Barnett was undefeated in conference divisional play (5-0) and overall (6-0) as she split her season at fourth and fifth singles. The Port Washington, NY native was also 2-0 in doubles divisional play and 3-0 in doubles overall. Barnett was named to the All-Tournament team at No. 5 singles after helping her team win the 2021 SUNYAC title.
Coach of the Year - Rob Bruley, New Paltz
In his 23rd year as the head coach, Bruley led his team to its third-straight SUNYAC title and the seventh overall, all under his tenure. The Hawks went 5-0 in the East division to take the top seed into the semifinals this season. New Paltz beat Fredonia in the semifinal round (5-0) and then went on to defeat Oneonta (5-1) in the championship match. The Hawks will play Babson on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
