SUNYAC Honors Field Hockey Athletes Across League

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC releases its field hockey annual awards including All-Conference teams, Offensive Player of the Year, Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year as voted on by the conference coaches.

Offensive Player of the Year: Natasia Plunkett, New Paltz
Plunkett totaled 15 goals, including four game-winning, and three assists for 33 points in 17 games this season. New Paltz was the No. 4 seed after regular season play with a 3-3 conference record. Plunkett was named to the SUNYAC field hockey All-Tournament team after the Hawks fell to the No. 1 seed Geneseo, 2-4, in the semifinals. New Paltz ended the 2022 season 10-7 overall.

Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year: Hailey Roethel, Geneseo
Roethel was part of a defense that allowed just 16 goals in 19 games (0.84 goals against average) and shutout 11 teams. The defense only gave up 120 shots while the Knights made 366 shots on their opponents. Roethel helped the Knights go undefeated, 6-0, in conference play to earn the top-seed going into the SUNYAC postseason. She was named to the All-Tournament team after Geneseo fell to Cortland in the final game, 2-1 in overtime. The team finished the 2022 season 15-4 overall.

Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Erica Scheblein, Oswego
Senior goalkeeper, Scheblein led the league with an .844 save percentage after making 124 saves this season. She finished with a 1.44 goals against average and recorded five shutouts in 16 games. Scheblein had seven wins in the cage for the Lakers in 2022.

Coaching Staff of the Year: Geneseo
Margaret McConnell and staff Marissa Kocher, Meg Reitz and Julia Kim led the Knights to a No. 1 seed after going undefeated, 6-0, in regular season conference play. Geneseo advanced to the SUNYAC championship game, but lost in overtime, 2-1 to end their season 15-4 overall. The staff coached five All-Conference athletes including Co-Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year Hailey Roethel. The Knights led the league with 69 goals overall and a 0.83 goals against average over 19 games.
