Three SUNYAC basketball teams prepare for NCAAs

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Plattsburgh, Brockport and Geneseo will represent the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in the NCAA DIII men's and women's basketball tournament this weekend. Plattsburgh men earned an automatic bid after winning the SUNYAC title and will host the first two rounds while Brockport men received an at-large bid into the tournament and will travel to Johns Hopkins University to face Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). On the women's side, Geneseo enters the tournament after clinching the SUNYAC crown for the sixth time overall and will play Ithaca at Tufts.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - PLATTSBURGH

No. 16 Plattsburgh State men's basketball, along with SUNY Plattsburgh as an institution has been selected to host first and second round games inside Memorial Hall for the 2017-18 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament March 2-3.

Plattsburgh State will welcome New Jersey City, Union (N.Y.) and Nichols to Memorial Hall for the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Friday's first round action starts with New Jersey City taking on Union (N.Y.) at 5:30 p.m.

No. 16  Plattsburgh State and Nichols will tangle in the second game Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of Friday night's games will meet in the second round on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale starting Friday March 2 at 3:30 p.m. inside Memorial Hall. There will be no presale tickets available.

Tickets for the second round game will go on sale at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Ticket prices are set at $10 for adults, $5 for children under 18 as well as seniors and students with a valid college ID. Kids that are aged two and under will be admitted for free.

Additionally, the first 200 Plattsburgh State students to pick up tickets on Friday and on Saturday will receive them at no charge.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - BROCKPORT

The College at Brockport men's basketball team's season will continue as they earned an at-large to the 2018 Division III NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles will travel to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland to face off against MIT on Friday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
 
Tickets will be $10 for adults; $5 for senior citizens, students of the participating institutions (with ID) and children; kids two and under will be admitted free. Doors to Goldfarb Gym will open one hour prior to the start of competition on both days.
 
Brockport earned an at-large bid out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) after falling in the semifinals to SUNY Oneonta. It is the first time the Green and Gold have made the tournament since the 2014 season. The Golden Eagles are led by senior Hamed Shamseldin (20.4 ppg), sophomore Justin Summers (17.4 ppg) and junior Tyler Collins (10.2 ppg). Shamseldin also leads the team in assists (5.9) while Summers leads in rebounding (7.7). The Golden Eagles rank ninth in the nation in free throw attempts (701), 11th in free throws made (487) and 15th in blocked shots (5.0).
 
If Brockport advances, they will face the winner of John Hopkins and La Roche College on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - GENESEO

Geneseo will take on Ithaca in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament as the 64-team field was announced Monday.

The Knights will take on the Bombers this Friday (March 2) in a game hosted by Tufts. The host Jumbos will also take on Westfield (Mass.) with the two winners advancing to Saturday's (March 3) second round with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line. 

The Knights (25-2) received an automatic bid to their fourth-straight tournament after winning their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament since 2015. Geneseo will also be making the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. 

Geneseo won two home games to kick off the 2017 tournament a season ago, including a 78-72 victory over Rochester to advance to the "Sweet 16" for the second time in three seasons. The Knights have advanced as far as the sectional finals on three occasions, falling to Salem State, 76-65, in 1995, and to Scranton, 79-70, in 1993. 

The Knights and Bombers will tip off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 2, with Tufts and Westfield State scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
