Cortland and Oswego capture weekly softball awards

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its Softball Pitcher and Athlete of the Week. Cortland's Sam Van Dorn has been selected as Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, while Oswego's Rebecca Vilchez has been selected as this week's Athlete of the Week.

Vilchez came up big for the Lakers at the plate this week, recording a .517 batting average and .759 slugging percentage in eight conference contests. In 29 at-bats, she recorded 15 hits, recording a hit in each of the team's eight games. Almost half of Vilchez's hits were extra-base hits, as she had seven doubles this week. Vilchez was also crucial to Oswego's run production, driving in eight runs and coming around to score nine. The Lakers are now 12-10 overall, with a conference record of 5-5. They will face Brockport and Geneseo in two conference double-headers this weekend.

Van Dorn continues to carry the Red Dragon squad, posting a 0.55 ERA in five appearances this past week, four as a starter. She allowed 23 hits and six walks, and struck out 22 batters in 25 and two thirds innings. The junior opened the week by allowing one unearned run, four hits and one walk and striking out six in a 9-1 win over Potsdam. She also gave up just one unearned run and struck out three in a seven-hitter during a 9-1 win at Oneonta, and she tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk in a 6-0 win at New Paltz. Her lone loss was a 3-0 setback at nationally ranked St. John Fisher. The Red Dragons now hold an overall record of 13-12, and sit at the top of the SUNYAC rankings with a conference record of 6-2. The team will face Ithaca College this Wednesday in a road double-header.
