Geneseo softball wins 2018 SUNYAC title

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Geneseo Knights captured their second-ever State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) softball championship title, Sunday in Geneseo.

Geneseo defeated Cortland, 5-1, on Sunday after the Red Dragons beat the Knights Saturday to force a second game. With the win, the Knights received an automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA DIII softball tournament.

Geneseo pitcher, Ashlyn Kersch struck out four and allowed just one earned run on 11 hits in seven innings today against Cortland. She was honored as the 2018 SUNYAC Tournament MVP Sunday after the game.

Anna Merante went 2-for-3 for the Knights with a triple and RBI while Alyssa Persich went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among her peers. This year's softball winner was recognized at the championship. Congratulations to Geneseo's Taylor Moore.
