Geneseo claims 2018-19 Commissioner's Cup
CORTLAND N.Y.- Geneseo takes its fifth-consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup, announced Tuesday at the conference's annual awards banquet.
Geneseo finished with an average of 8.74 points to clinch its sixth overall cup in the history of the award which was started in the 1996-1997 academic year. Cortland, a 17-time winner and the only other recipient of the cup, came in second with an average of 7.48 points followed by New Paltz in third with 7.05 points.
The Knights had an impressive year winning 10 team championships. They took home three championships in the fall, five championships in the winter, and two in the spring.
In the fall the Knights won both men's and women's cross country. The men were led by senior Sean McAneny who was named Runner of the Year. The women were led by Elise Ramirez who was also named the Runner of the Year. Dan Moore of Geneseo was honored as both the Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Geneseo's third title of the fall was in women's soccer where they defeated Cortland, 1-0, in the championship game. The team was led by senior Emily Janiszewski who was the conference Defensive Player of the Year.
In the winter season, the Knights took both men's and women's indoor track and field championships. Again the men's team was led by Sean McAneny, who won the Track Athlete of the Year award. Chirs Popovici of Geneseo was honored as the Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year. The Knights also won the men's and women's swimming and diving championships. The men's team was led by Clark Davis who was named Swimmer of the Year, Corey Wirth who was named Diver of the Year and, and Sean McClellan who was named Rookie of the Year. The women were led by Deidra Osula who was named the Swimmer of the Year, and Samantha Reichman who was named Diver of the Year. Head coach Paul Dotterweich and diving coach Shawn Austin were both honored with the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year Awards respectively. Geneseo's fifth title of the winter season was men's ice hockey where they beat Oswego in the finals, 4-3. Conlan Keenan was named the Herb Hammond Player of the Year and Devin McDonald was named Goaltender of the Year.
The Knights closed out the academic year by winning both the men's and women's outdoor track and field championships in the spring. Geneseo's Erin McDougall was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet.
